Jump ring jewellery set

Jump ring bracelet

This is my version of the ‘Crystal Clear’ bracelet featured in the Feb 2007 edition of Bead and Button.  The beads I have used are faceted glass and 6mm mother of pearl.  I used 18 and 20 gauge silver-plated wire to make the jump rings.  Once I had completed the main part of the bracelet I discovered that I did not have a suitable clasp so I created my own from wire.  I wanted to take the design further to make a set and here’s what I came up with:

Jump ring necklace  Jump ring earrings

The centrepiece of the necklace follows the bracelet design with the beads on the uppermost edge only.  It was necessary to adjust the design in this way as the original bracelet pattern was too heavy and stiff to hang nicely.  To create a stable centrepiece that could be attached to the chain of the necklace I used 28 gauge wire to thread the beads finishing it off with a wrapped loop at either end.  The rest of the necklace chain is based on the chainmaille design from the Bead and Button bracelet pattern.  I made the triangular headpins and added small pearlised seed beads before attaching them to the centrepiece.

I wanted the earrings to reflect the same design but it was not easy to translate it to something suitable to be worn as an earring.  Each element needed to be included but without making them too cumbersome.  I started with the chainmaille motif of 2 large central jump rings with 2 pairs of the smaller jump rings on other side.  By creating 2 eyepins I could then thread on the blue faceted glass beads on each side of the central jump rings.  The eyepins were then joined at the top by a further jump ring enabling the design to be attached to the earwire.  The triangular headpin dangles were joined to a chain of jump rings attached to the centre of the design and the wire loops at the base of each eyepin.

Bead set challenge December 2006

UK Beaders Forum Bead Set Challenge December 2006

Bead set challenge

I made this set of jewellery for the UK Beaders Forum Bead Set Challenge December 2006.

The gorgeous focal beads were made by Caroline Hannon of Crafted Gems

At the front of the necklace I have placed Caroline’s beads on wire. They are separated by mother of pearl and some beaded right angle weave beads.

The ‘chain’ is a spiral rope which has been attached using gimp. The same theme has been carried through with the earrings and the bracelet.

Versatile stretchy bracelets

Bracelets are notoriously difficult to size due to the differing diameters of people’s wrists. For this reason beaded bracelets on clear stretchy elastic are very versatile as well as pretty. The examples above all incorporate gorgeous Italian glass beads.

Below are instructions on how to make a secure and hidden knot.

1. Thread up your chosen beads. The number required will depend on the size of the beads and the overall diameter of the bracelet required. Firstly decide on the length of your bracelet and lay out the beads (if you are using just one type of bead you can divide the length of the bracelet by the size of the bead).

2. When you are ready to complete the bracelet find a bead with a hole large enough to cover the knot and tie a simple reef knot next to it. Don’t cut the ends off just yet!

3. To make sure the knot stays secure clasp the threads on each side of the knot (as you have not cut the ends this is 4 threads in total) and wiggle furiously!! This might sound strange but the idea is to put the tension of the knot inside itself so that it does not come undone. This is especially important for clear stretchy elastic as it can slip easily.

4. Once the knot is complete apply a little glue and pull it inside the bead you selected in step one. Leave to dry before cutting the ends. The knot should now be securely hidden inside the bead. Long ends can be threaded through a few beads to hide them before cutting.
