Square stitch / bead loom seed bead pattern example no. 3

The patterns below may be made using either the beadweaving technique of square stitch or on a bead loom. Square stitch creates a good, strong and durable beaded fabric and I personally prefer it to using a bead loom.  The patterns provided here can be used to create bracelets, chokers and other accessories.

If you don’t yet know how to do square stitch my tutorial is here.

I am into peyote bead weaving and in all the magazines and even in down loading free patterns everyone just assumes you know how to read a pattern. For the most part visually seeing the peice is enough, but for the more advanced designs it’s alittle different. What resources are available? Thank You, Susan Kenny

    Hello Susan

I am planning to do some peyote stitch tutorials but in the mean time I Googled ‘reading peyote stitch patterns’ for you and came up with this page which I think will be helpful:

    http://www.rubysbeadwork.com/ReadingPeyotePatterns.html

If you want to use my square stitch patterns on this page I also have a square stitch tutorial here:

Reading a square stitch pattern is much easier than peyote as I am sure you already know!

Peyote stitch patterns are confusing because you have to keep a close eye on which row you are on - they read diagonally and drawing a diagonal line across the chart may help you. Ruby’s beadwork site also offers to links to other explanations - there are several different methods of keeping track and different people find different techniques easier.

If you put ‘reading peyote stitch patterns’ into Google you should also find a long list of other sites offering advice. Hopefully I will get round to writing a tutorial myself soon!

    Clare
